Book Series Broadens Career Choices for Girls : The author and illustrator of ‘You Can Be’ will talk about fields in math and science available to women.

Cascade Pass, a small publisher in Culver City, is publishing a series of “You Can Be” books to encourage young girls to consider careers in the sciences.

Judith Love Cohen, an electrical engineer who worked on the Apollo 12 lunar mission, co-authors the books, which depict the lives of female oceanographers, engineers, architects, astronauts, marine biologists and zoologists. She will read excerpts from the series at 3 p.m. Friday at Girls Inc., 5315 Foothill Road, Carpinteria. Call 644-8262 for details.

David Katz, the series illustrator and publisher, and Cohen will discuss and sign their books at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Channel Islands National Park, 1901 Spinnaker Drive, Ventura. Call 658-5700.

At 2 p.m. Saturday, Cohen will read from her new book for children, “A Clean Sea: The Rachel Carson Story,” at Barnes & Noble, 4360 E. Main St., Ventura.

Gauvin, the former street performer whose poetry is described by critics as a stunning mix of political commentary and melancholy romance, will read at 7 p.m. Saturday in the Ventura Bookstore, 522 E. Main St. Gauvin began his career at age 13 when he joined the Kuntu Writers Workshop at the University of Pittsburgh and signed on as host of a television show for children.

Donald Black will hold a workshop on meeting people based on his book, “Smart Dating: A Guide for Men & Women to Dating, Romance & Sex” at 7 p.m. Saturday, Barnes & Noble, 4360 E. Main St., Ventura.

Former TV Tarzan Ron Ely will sign “East Beach,” his second Jake Sands mystery, at 1 p.m. Sunday at Mysteries to Die For, 2940 Thousand Oaks Blvd., Thousand Oaks. Ely’s first book, “Night Shadows,” was published last year.

Poets are encouraged to share their work at the open mike session following featured local poet Elnora McNaughton, who will read at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Barnes & Noble Bookstore’s monthly poetry night in Ventura.
