HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Hueneme Pitcher Towers Over Oxnard With 3-Hitter

Hueneme High senior right-hander Josh Towers pitched a three-hitter, beating Oxnard, 3-0, in a Channel League baseball opener Thursday at Oxnard.

The Vikings improved to 5-0 for their best start in Coach Reg Welker’s 16 seasons.

Towers (2-0) struck out 11 and did not walk a batter. He struck out six in a row in the fifth and sixth innings.

Quartz Hill 11, Burbank 0--Kyle Goss had two home runs and drove in six runs and sophomore Mark Madsen (1-0) pitched a three-hitter and struck out five for the Rebels in the nonleague game at Burbank.

Goss hit a two-run home run in the third to give Quartz Hill a 2-0 lead. He drove in two runs with a double in the sixth to increase the Rebels’ advantage to 8-0. His two-run home run in the seventh gave Quartz Hill (2-0) its final margin.

L.A. Baptist 8, St. Genevieve 5--John Wilson went three for three with a home run and two RBIs for the Knights (1-1) in an L.A. Baptist tournament game. Emilio Gonzalez had three doubles for the Valiants (1-2).

Queen of Angels 12, Providence 8--Gabriel Megana had two base-clearing triples to lead the Angels (1-2, 1-1) over the visiting Knights in the Liberty League opener.

Poly 14, Reseda 5--The Parrots took advantage of nine Regent errors on their way to a Valley Pac-8 Conference victory at Reseda. Reseda (0-2, 0-2) made five errors during a four-run first inning.

Poly had seven hits.

Cleveland 8, El Camino Real 4--Junior Brignac had three hits and three RBIs and Nate Lee had two hits for the Cavaliers (2-3, 1-1) in a Northwest Valley Conference game at Cleveland.

Belmont 7, Verdugo Hills 3--Verdugo Hills (1-1, 1-1) made three errors in the sixth that contributed to six Belmont runs in a Northern Conference game at Belmont. Dan Craig had three hits, Jimmy Stevenson two for Verdugo Hills. Belmont (1-4, 1-1) had three hits.

Kennedy 13, Birmingham 1--David Soto (2-0) struck out two and walked seven in a Northwest Valley Conference two-hitter for visiting Kennedy (4-1, 2-0).

Terrmel Sledge had three hits, including a double and a triple, driving in two runs and scoring three.

SOFTBALL

Hoover 2, Verdugo Hills 0--Tina Kinney pitched a shutout and had six strikeouts for the Tornadoes (4-1) in a semifinal game of the Hoover tournament.

Daphne Vadman had two hits and two RBIs and Nicole Gianpaolo had two hits and scored a run for Hoover, which will face Hart in the championship game at 3:15 p.m. today.

Burbank 7, Bell-Jeff 0--The Bulldogs watched the Guards commit 10 errors as they cruised in a Hoover tournament consolation-bracket game.

Lori Sutcliff (1-1) and Megan Lackey combined to hold the Guards (0-3) to two hits.

The Bulldogs (2-4) face Santa Monica in today’s consolation championship.

Montclair Prep 28, Faith Baptist 0--Brandi Cohen and Stephanie Aron combined on a no-hitter for the second time this season for the host Mounties (6-0).

Cohen ran her scoreless-inning streak to 27 before yielding to Aron for the final inning of the nonleague contest, which was called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

Tamra Freedman went five for five, and drove in five runs. Monique Urquidez had three hits and three RBIs.

Village Christian 4, San Gabriel 3--Jessie Leivo had two hits and two RBIs and Judy Swanson added two hits for the Crusaders (3-1).

Agoura 3, Oak Park 0--Jennifer Grennan lost her no-hit bid on a single with two out in the top of the seventh inning of a nonleague game at Agoura. Grennan has pitched three one-hitters for the Chargers (4-0).

Breeane Pohlman had two RBIs and Heather Bunch and Christine Larralde each had two hits for Agoura.

Harvard-Westlake 3, Beverly Hills 1--Jamie Kantrowitz had the game-winning single for the Wolverines (5-1) in the fifth inning of a Westside tournament game at Beverly Hills.

Alemany 7, Bishop Montgomery 0--Jamie Moore went three for three with an RBI and Sophie Contreraz struck out nine as the Indians (5-0) won a nonleague game at Alemany.

Louisville 6, St. Monica 2--Shannon Joyce hit a triple and a double and drove in two runs for the Royals (1-2). Stefanie Urman pitched a two-hitter for Louisville.

Cleveland 3, Venice 0--Oliva Miguel had 10 strikeouts and sophomore Dahvi Wilson drove in all three Cavalier runs in a nonconference game at Venice.

Kennedy 21, Jefferson 0--Freshman Brandy Mercado pitched a no-hitter and struck out 10 during her pitching debut in a nonconference game at Kennedy. Kelly Samuel and Jennifer Real each went four for four for the Golden Cougars (4-0).

El Camino Real 3, Sylmar 0--Tami Jones pitched a one-hitter and had two hits for the Conquistadores (6-1) in a nonconference game at Sylmar.

Taft 6, Grant 5--Michelle Hernandez (1-3) scattered three hits and struck out seven for Taft (1-3) in a nonconference game at Taft. She added three hits, including a triple. Pitcher Eti Hadad (0-3) singled and scored twice for Grant (1-3).

San Fernando 6, Poly 2--Lily Hernandez had three RBIs and two triples for the Tigers in a nonconference game at San Fernando.

Chaminade 3, Granada Hills 2--Sheila Shiladi scored two runs, including the game-winner in the 10th inning on a double by Ashlie Hayes in a nonleague game at Granada Hills.

Hayes had two doubles and two RBIs for the Eagles (3-2) and added two unassisted double plays, including one to end the game.

Jessica Kreith had four hits and struck out four for Granada Hills (4-2).

BOYS’ TRACK

Royal 96, Camarillo 62, Simi Valley 7--Christian Broussard, Greg Seth-Hunter and Brandon Gibson each won two events for Royal in the Marmonte League opener at Simi Valley.

Broussard timed 10.9 seconds in the 100 meters and 23.1 in the 220 yards and Seth-Hunter clocked 14.9 in the 110-meter high hurdles and 41.9 in the 330-yard intermediates.

Gibson spanned 20 feet 8 1/4 inches in the long jump and 43-2 1/2 in the triple jump.

Thousand Oaks 81, Newbury Park 56, Channel Islands 22--Keith O’Doherty and James Pashley were double winners for Thousand Oaks in the Marmonte League opener at Channel Islands.

O’Doherty ran 4 minutes 30.6 seconds in the 1,600 meters and 9:30.0 in the 3,200. Pashley spanned a personal best of 21-0 in the long jump and bounded 40-9 1/2 in the triple jump.

R.J. Starr won the shotput with a personal best of 53-5 1/2 for Thousand Oaks.

GIRLS’ TRACK

Thousand Oaks 72, Newbury Park 53, Channel Islands 23--Kim Mortensen won the 800 in 2:22.3 and the 1,600 in 5:13.6 to lead Thousand Oaks to victory in the Marmonte League opener at Channel Islands.

Dawn Anderson was a double winner in the shotput (36-7) and discus (119-5) for Newbury Park.

VOLLEYBALL

Granada Hills d. Taft, 15-2, 15-7, 15-8--Ryan Kamins had 12 kills and Earnest Yun had 10 blocks for the Highlanders (4-1, 2-0) in a Northwest Valley Conference match at Taft.

Oakwood d. Holy Martyrs, 15-5, 2-15, 15-7, 15-3--Jon Altschul had 15 kills for the Gorillas (1-0, 1-0) in a Liberty League opener at Oakwood.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Burbank 13, Crescenta Valley 5--The Bulldogs’ No. 2 doubles team of Oliver Lao and Amerson Suzon swept their sets without losing a game, leading Burbank (5-0) in a nonleague match at Burbank. Lao and Suzon are 15-0 this season.
