Temporary Bridge on Interstate 5 Expected to Open Today
Interstate 5, severed last week when a bridge near Coalinga collapsed, killing seven, was expected to reopen to traffic by early this morning, state officials said Friday.
The Department of Transportation said expedited construction of a temporary bridge made of railroad flatcars would allow resumption of travel over Arroyo Pasajero Creek.
Using construction lessons learned from the accelerated repair of freeways after the Northridge earthquake, the temporary span was built in the existing roadway median. It will allow construction of a permanent bridge on either side to proceed without delays, officials said.
The department also announced completion of a temporary bridge on California 1 over the Carmel River in Monterey County.
