HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Near-Perfect Chan Pitches No-Hitter

Brian Chan pitched a no-hitter, struck out nine batters and walked one as Glendale High defeated Pasadena, 5-0, in a Pacific League opener Friday.

The junior left-hander had a perfect game until he walked the Bulldogs’ leadoff batter in the seventh inning.

The next batter hit into a double play and Chan ended the game with a strikeout.

Senior Mark Martin singled home the Dynamiters’ first run in a five-run sixth for Glendale (3-1).

Agoura 18, North Hollywood 0--Left-hander Craig Gladstone (2-0) struck out five and walked two while pitching a no-hitter for the Chargers (4-1) in a San Fernando Valley tournament game.

North Hollywood (1-7) hit only three fair balls out of the infield.

Matt Gershon had two doubles and five runs batted in for the Chargers.

Ventura 1, Buena 0--Robert Verstraeten pitched a one-hitter and Monty Moritz hit a solo home run in the third for the Cougars in a Channel League opener.

Verstraeten (1-1) had eight strikeouts and two walks for Ventura (4-1).

Moritz’s home run was his second of the season and second of the week against Buena, which lost, 5-1, to the Cougars in a Westside tournament semifinal Tuesday.

Hueneme 13, Oxnard 6--David Valadez hit a three-run home run in the third inning for the Vikings (6-0, 2-0) in a Channel League game at Hueneme.

Alemany 7, Crespi 6--Doug Segraves’ two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the seventh gave the Indians the victory in a Mission League game at Alemany.

Alemany (3-2, 1-0) had three home runs in the game. Rex Supa hit a two-run shot in the second to cut the Indians’ deficit to 3-2 and Bill Scott and Rob Glenn hit solo home runs in the fourth as Alemany trimmed its deficit to 5-4.

Chris Crawley and Brad Farlow (three RBIs), each had three hits for Crespi (1-5, 0-2).

Chaminade 1, St. Francis 1--Gabe Crecion allowed five hits and struck out 17 for the Eagles in a Mission League game that was called after nine innings because of darkness.

The game will be completed at a later date.

Raul Lepe of St. Francis struck out eight and walked three in eight innings.

Simi Valley 14, North Torrance 5--Neil Oberheide allowed three hits and struck out eight in six innings for the Pioneers in an El Segundo tournament game.

Robert Comeau hit his first home run of the season in an eight-run third for the Pioneers (5-1).

Danny Schwartz had three hits, scored four runs and had two stolen bases for Simi Valley.

L.A. Baptist 6, Whitney 5--Jon Wada had a double and a home run to lead the Knights past the Cougars in the L.A. Baptist tournament.

Peter Dirkson singled and doubled for the Knights (2-1).

Nordhoff 11, Santa Clara 3--Rusty Perry had three RBIs and a double for the Rangers (4-1, 1-0) in a Frontier League opener.

Canyons 2, Highland 1--Rick Thomas scattered nine hits in recording his first victory and Mike Bench earned a save as the Cowboys beat the Bulldogs in a nonleague game at Highland.

The Bulldogs committed three errors and allowed seven Cowboy stolen bases, including one that cost them the game.

In the fourth, Trevor Ealy was on third and Dan Freeman was on first. Freeman drew a throw as he attempted to steal second and Ealy alertly scored on the exchange. Ealy finished with three steals.

Rio Mesa 7, Dos Pueblos 0--Richard Soliz struck out 10 and walked one in a complete-game shutout for the Spartans (3-2, 1-0) in a Channel League opener.

Franklin 7, El Camino Real 7--El Camino Real rallied from a 5-0 deficit in a nine-inning game called because of darkness.

Pinch-hitter Alan Takagi’s seventh-inning sacrifice fly for El Camino Real tied the score, 7-7.

Junior left-hander Mike Conn pitched four perfect innings in relief for El Camino Real (4-2-1). Conn has retired 24 consecutive batters in his last two appearances.

Byron Carnes was three for three for El Camino Real and teammate Marvin Jones hit a solo home run.

South Gate 12, Grant 1--Daniel Rothman had a double and a single in defeat for the Lancers (2-4) in a San Fernando tournament game.

BOYS’ TRACK

Birmingham 86, Granada Hills 41--Marvin Powell won the 110-meter high hurdles with a wind-aided time of 14.0 seconds as the Braves (2-0, 2-0) posted their 59th consecutive dual-meet victory in a Northwest Valley Conference meet at Granada Hills.

SOFTBALL

Hart 1, Hoover 0--Tracy Clark’s sixth-inning single drove in Kellie Nordhagen from second base in the Hoover tournament final.

La Canada 3, Verdugo Hills 0--Lindsey Parker (4-1) pitched a two-hitter, struck out 16 and walked one for the Spartans (4-1) in the third-place game of the Hoover tournament.

Cornerstone Christian 14-14, Coastal Christian 0-0--Karen Breshears (2-0) pitched a no-hitter in the first game and Julie Siefert (1-0) duplicated the feat in the second game of the nonleague doubleheader in Camarillo.

Moorpark 1, Calabasas 0--Pitcher Melissa Krolik’s throwing error in the third inning allowed the Musketeers’ Tracey Milburn to score from third in the Frontier League game.

Calabasas (2-2) had three hits to one for Moorpark (2-1), but the Coyotes committed three errors.

Alemany 7, Hawthorne 2--Melissa Piomdetti’s fourth-inning double with the bases loaded drove in two runs and broke open a close game for the Indians in a first-round game of the Redondo tournament.

Kennedy 1, San Pedro 0--Sandra Durazo (4-0) allowed two hits, struck out 12 and walked four for the Golden Cougars in a first-round game of the Downey tournament.

Kennedy (5-0) scored the only run in the second inning when Jennifer DelReal singled home Dana McCall, who tripled with one out.
