NHL ROUNDUP : Soderstrom Is Too Much for Rangers

Tommy Soderstrom had style, and there wasn’t much substance to the New York Islanders’ 1-0 victory over the New York Rangers on Thursday night at Uniondale.

Soderstrom stopped 37 shots in the shutout, which broke a five-game losing streak for the Islanders.

“Well, he certainly saved us, that’s for sure,” Islander Coach Lorne Henning said. “That’s probably the ugliest game we’ve played all year. By far, the worst in the last six (games).”

Soderstrom earned the eighth shutout of his career and first with the Islanders. He made several difficult saves, the biggest at the end. With Ranger goalie Mike Richter pulled for a sixth attacker, Brian Leetch fired a screen shot from the right circle that Soderstrom somehow got with his pad.

Pat Verbeek, traded to the Rangers earlier in the day from Hartford, got to New York in time to play and get three shots against Soderstrom.

“I was maybe trying too hard,” Verbeek said after being traded for Glen Featherstone, Mike Stewart and two draft picks. “I was trying to put the puck through the net.”

Dallas 2, Edmonton 1--Kevin Hatcher broke a 1-1 tie with a second-period power-play goal and Andy Moog stopped 25 shots for the Stars, who stretched their home unbeaten streak to seven games (5-0-2).

Chicago 3, Vancouver 1--Tony Amonte, Bernie Nicholls and Patrick Poulin had goals for the Blackhawks, who spotted the Canucks a 1-0 lead, then won at Vancouver.
