SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Don Jamieson, helped by two timely double plays and given a narrow lead by a crafty baserunner, pitched a three-hitter as host El Dorado beat Katella, 2-0, in an Empire League baseball game Friday.

Jamieson (5-0) outpitched Katella’s left-handed starter, Jason Stockstill, who pitched a two-hitter.

Stockstill breezed through three innings without allowing a baserunner, using a variety of changeups and fastballs to keep El Dorado guessing. However, the Golden Hawks’ leadoff hitter, Chris Beck, pestered the Knights by scoring both of El Dorado’s runs.

Beck chopped a hard single to center to open the fourth and stole second. Mike Castillo then reached on a perfect bunt, and Beck took third. After Stockstill struck out the next two hitters, Beck scored on a passed ball.

Beck again created havoc on the bases in the sixth. He reached on an error, stole second and moved to third on a sacrifice by Trent Cuevas. Beck then scored on a chopper to Stockstill, barely beating the throw to the plate.

Katella threatened in the top of the second, putting runners on first and second with one out. But Joe Fraser hit into a double play.

Jamieson, who struck out three and walked two, allowed only two baserunners after the fourth inning. Katella’s ninth batter, Geoff Burgeno, hit a one-out single in the fifth but Geno Ramirez then hit into a double play.
