Bandel Pitches Four-Hitter as El Modena Upsets No. 5 Canyon

Senior Brett Bandel gave up only four hits, all singles, and struck out four as El Modena upset Canyon, 3-2, in a Century League baseball game Friday at El Modena.

Canyon is ranked fifth in the Southern Section Division II poll.

El Modena (2-4, 1-1) scored the winning run when losing pitcher Greg Jacobs walked the first two hitters in the bottom of the fifth inning. Bandel then hit a grounder to second and Canyon went for a double play but the relay throw to first was wild, enabling Frank Rubalcaba to score. Canyon is 6-2, 1-1.

In other Century League games:

Orange 7, Santa Ana Valley 5--Junior catcher Anthony Damiano had two hits and three runs batted in for Orange (3-4, 2-0). Behind the plate, Damiano threw out two runners and picked off a runner at third with the bases loaded in the sixth inning. Art Bell had two triples for Orange.

Foothill 9, Villa Park 8--Shaw Scovel hit into a force out as the winning run scored in the seventh for host Foothill (3-3-1, 1-1). Tyler Lang, went three for three with two RBIs and a run scored.

In the Garden Grove League:

La Quinta 13, Rancho Alamitos 4--Craig Kuzmic had two hits, scored three runs and drove in two for host La Quinta (10-1-1, 2-0). Craig Jones pitched five innings and struck out six for the victory.

Santiago 5, Bolsa Grande 0--Frank Hernandez pitched a five-hit shutout, striking out six and walking none for host Santiago (3-3, 1-0).

In the Freeway League:

Troy 10, Sonora 10--Chad Elliott hit a grand slam in the bottom of the seventh to give Troy (4-3-1, 1-1-1) the tie. The Warriors scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh. Steve Steele led off with a single, followed by walks to Joe Frausto and Justin Link.

R.J. Connell reached on a error, as a run scored and the bases remained loaded for Elliott, who finished with two hits, two runs scored and five RBIs. Ryan Owens went three for four, with three runs scored, three RBIs and led off the game with a home run for Sonora (8-0-1, 2-0-1). The Raiders are ranked seventh in Division II.

Sunny Hills 13, Buena Park 4--Greg Garand had a grand slam for Sunny Hills (8-2, 3-0).

In the Golden West League:

Westminster 3, Tustin 1--Alex Vazquez had a two-run triple for Westminster in a three-run fourth inning. Wijo Berumen pitched a five-hitter and improved to 4-0.

Santa Ana 9, Ocean View 5--Jesus Rodarte was three for four with a triple and three RBIs for host Santa Ana (4-5, 1-2).

Saddleback 3, Servite 2--Visiting Saddleback’s Joel Ramirez came in to relieve Jorge Robleswith the tying run in scoring position and two outs in the sixth inning, and struck out the next batter, Dave Waters, to end the threat. Ramirez then worked a scoreless ninth for the save for Saddleback (3-5, 1-2).

In the Olympic League:

Orange Lutheran 4, Cerritos Valley Christian 0--Adam Kavaness pitched a three-hitter, striking out nine, for his second shutout of the season. Kavaness has not given up an earned run in 29 1/3 innings. Tim Smith was three for three as Orange Lutheran (5-3, 3-1) handed Valley Christian its first league loss.

In Pacific Coast League:

University 13, Laguna Beach 0--Justin Dunning was two for three, including a three-run home run and five runs batted in, for host University (5-5, 3-0).

Aliso Niguel 4, Estancia 2--Ryan Devine pitched a complete game, walking two and striking out six for host Aliso Niguel (5-2, 1-1). Greg Ferrell was two for three with two RBIs for the Wolverines.

In the Sea View League:

Irvine 6, El Toro 3--Scott Larsen pitched six innings for the victory and Shaun Wooley was two for three with two runs scored for host Irvine (8-1, 3-0).

Santa Margarita 10, Corona del Mar 5--Brian Griffin went three for four, including his first home run of the season in the third inning for Santa Margarita (5-4, 3-0). Senior Ryan Reightley pitched six innings to improve to 3-0.

In the South Coast League:

San Clemente 6, Dana Hills 5--With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, San Clemente (6-3, 2-1) rallied from a two-run deficit for the victory. With a runner on first, Robert Frith walked, followed by a Paul Anderson single. Mike Castaneda singled to tie it, 5-5, and Sam Adair singled to drive in Frith with the winning run.

Trabuco Hills 12, Mission Viejo 1--Jake Anderson was two for three with three runs scored for Trabuco Hills (3-3-1, 2-1).

In the Sunset League:

Marina 2, Huntington Beach 0--Justin Lynch (4-0) pitched a two-hitter with five strikeouts as host Marina won a game that took about 1 hour and 10 minutes. Marina scored both runs in the fifth, when Josh Roberts and Mike Tyler singled and Chad Scuncio followed with a two-run triple.
