THE PREPS : PREP TRACK ROUNDUP : Sharifi Makes Book With Record Toss

Sepher Sharifi of University moved into the Orange County record books in the discus Saturday, with his toss of 182 feet 1 inch Saturday at the Trabuco Hills Invitational track and field meet.

Sharifi’s throw ranks among the top 10 in county history. He also placed third in the shotput, with a mark of 54-10, the best by a county athlete this season.

Also having a stellar day was Tustin senior triple jumper Reggie Curry, who out-jumped his opponents by more than three feet. Curry finished with a county-leading mark of 48- 3/4. Curry jumped only twice, passing on the remainder of his attempts because none of his competitors were within reach.

Also setting a record in the field events was Laguna Hills sophomore Tayyiba Haneef, who easily won the girls’ high jump, clearing a meet record 5-7.

Patience and a strong kick paid off for Huntington Beach’s Jess Strutzel and Summer Shaw, who won the boys’ and girls’ 800-meter races.

Strutzel, a junior transfer from La Quinta, won the boys’ race in 1 minute 53 seconds. His time is the second best in the county this season and among the top five in the state.

Shaw, a sophomore, won the girls’ event in 2:14.7, a school and meet record.

Strutzel also ran a 4:38 mile earlier in the day as part of Huntington Beach’s 6,400 relay team, which placed third.

In the girls’ 6,400 relay, El Modena won in a meet record 21:41.7. The time by Katie Kennedy, Leslie Burton, Tara Whitfield and Jessica Dahlberg is seventh all-time in county history.

Pete Kovacs of El Modena won the pole vault, clearing 15-1 1/4, a meet record.

In the Fullerton City boys’ track and field championships:

Sunny Hills 104, Troy 46, Fullerton 8--Jeff Renaud and Garrett Jensen each won three events, helping Sunny Hills (4-0) to the victory. Renaud finished first in the 100 meters (11.2), 200 (23.0) and long jump (22-2). Garrett Jensen won the 800 (2:05.5), 1,600 (4:33.8) and 3,200 (10:38.7).

In the Fullerton City girls’ track and field championships:

Troy 92, Sunny Hills 64, Fullerton 4--Julie Steele took first place in three events for Troy (5-0). Steele won the 100 (12.6.), high jump (5-0) and long jump (16-0). Sunny Hills is 2-2.

In the Beaumont Invitational girls’ track and field:

St. Margaret’s runner named MVP--Junior Stephanie Canright of St. Margaret’s was named MVP of the meet after winning the 200 in 28.8, and placing third in the 300 hurdles in 52.5. She also ran on the 400 relay team that finished fifth.

In the Bishop Amat girls’ relays:

County schools take top two spots--Esperanza (68) finished first and Mission Viejo finished second at the Bishop Amat relays, a meet with 55 teams from four states. Courtney Pugmire won the 800 in 2:14.35 for the Aztecs. Teammate Inshirah Jones won the 300 hurdles (46.36).

Mission Viejo finished behind Esperanza with 64 points. Freshman Ashley Bethel won the 100 hurdles (14.63) and finished second in the long jump (17-9 1/4) for the Diablos.
