Martinez Methodically Wins Tennis Final

Conchita Martinez wrapped up her first title of the year in efficient and effective fashion, routing Magdalena Maleeva, 6-1, 6-1, Sunday to win her second consecutive Family Circle Cup at Hilton Head Island, S.C.

Martinez, who at times played ragged tennis, was rarely challenged by Maleeva, who lost each of her seven service games. The match lasted only 58 minutes.

Martinez, ranked No. 4 in the world, lost only one set in five matches during the tournament and won 36 of her final 41 games.

Monica Seles, out of tennis since being stabbed in the back two years ago, practiced with a college administrator at William & Mary’s new tennis center in Williamsburg, Va. A day after making a surprise appearance at the opening ceremonies for the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center, Seles took the court for a light morning workout before a crowd started to arrive for an exhibition.

Herschel Walker, who started his career at Giants Stadium as a member of the New Jersey Generals of the defunct U.S. Football League, is returning to the Meadowlands as a member of the New York Giants. Walker and the Giants reached a tentative agreement on a contract Sunday, said a Giant spokesman. A news conference will be held today.

Cornerback Dale Carter of the Kansas City Chiefs was found guilty of assault stemming from an incident May 21 at a hotel near Arrowhead Stadium. Carter was given a 180-day suspended sentence, two years’ probation and 40 hours of community service. Season-ticket holder Alan Turner testified he was assaulted in a bathroom after he tried to break up a fight between Carter and a young woman. Carter’s lawyers will appeal the decision.

Boxing

Gerald McClellan, who nearly died after a super-middleweight title fight with Nigel Benn in London in February, was transferred to an undisclosed hospital in the United States.

A hospital spokeswoman in London said McClellan, 27, of Freeport, Ill., was conscious and breathing independently when he was discharged, but he would still need continuous nursing care.

Yasuei Yakushiji of Japan pounded out a majority decision over Mexican challenger Cuauhtemoc Gomez at Nagoya, Japan, defending his World Boxing Council bantamweight title for the fourth time.

Distance Running

Kenya’s Rose Cheruiyot, 20, broke the women’s 5,000-meter world record, completing the Carlsbad 5000 road race in 15 minutes, 5 seconds.

In the men’s invitational, William Kirui of Kenya won in 13:17, the third-fastest 5K road time in history.

Defending champion Dionicio Ceron of Mexico shrugged off a challenge from Steve Moneghetti of Australia to become the first man to win the London Marathon twice.

Ceron finished in 2 hours 8 minutes 30 seconds, with Moneghetti, the 1989 runner-up, three seconds behind. Portugal’s Antonio Pinto, the 1992 winner, was third at 2:08:48.

In the women’s race, Poland’s Malgorzata Sobanska ended Katrin Dorre’s three-year reign as champion by winning in 2:27:43. Dorre, of Germany, placed seventh in 2:32:16. American Kim Jones, the early leader, was sixth in 2:31:35.

For the fourth time in six years and the third year in a row, a runner in the London Marathon died during the race. Officials did not give the identity of the latest victim.

Domingos Castro of Portugal moved away from Ethiopian Tena Negere in the final two miles to win the Paris Marathon in 2:10:06. Hungarian Judit Nagy won the women’s race in 2:31:42.

Miscellany

Paul Pierce of Inglewood High scored 28 points to lead all scorers in the West all-stars’ 126-115 victory in the McDonald’s All American high school game at St. Louis. The West’s Kevin Garnett, a 6-10 forward from Chicago’s Farragut Academy who scored 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, won the Wooden Award as the game’s most valuable player. . . . Karch Kiraly and Kent Steffes defeated Eduardo Bacel and Jose Loiola, 13-12, to win the $100,000 Miller Lite Open at Ft. Myers, Fla., for their fourth tournament victory in seven events.

Steve McManaman’s two goals helped Liverpool defeat Bolton 2-1, at Wembley, England, and win the English League Cup for a record fifth time. . . . Kevin Mitchell, after striking out with the bases loaded in the first inning, hit a solo homer in the sixth for the Fukuoako Daiei Hawks in a Japanese baseball league game. But the Hawks lost, 5-4, to the Seibu Lions. In his first regular-season at-bat on Saturday, Mitchell hit a grand slam.
