A forest fire that began on state land in southeastern New Jersey spread quickly over 15,000 acres Tuesday, forcing several hundred people to flee their homes for part of the day.

The fire began shortly after noon in the Greenwood Forest Fish and Wildlife Management Area in Ocean County.

No damage to homes and no injuries were reported by Tuesday night and the residents were allowed to return home around 9 p.m. EDT.
