One of the most unique spring training camps in baseball history opens Friday in Homestead, Fla.
The players’ association was completing a deal to open a camp for Dave Winfield, Kevin Brown and maybe more than 100 other free agents in this city south of Miami, which was set to be the spring home of the Cleveland Indians until Hurricane Andrew severely damaged it in 1992.
Former Baltimore manager Cal Ripken Sr. was approached by the union about running the camp, but he was not able to clear his schedule. Instead, former A’s manager Jackie Moore will be in charge.

Frustrated by the strike, Philadelphia Phillies catcher Darren Daulton resigned as the team’s player representative, citing a general disillusionment with lawyers. Meanwhile, the Phillies signed free agent catcher Lenny Webster to a minor-league contract. Webster, 30, hit .273 last year with five homers and 23 RBIs in 143 at-bats with Montreal.
