COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Moorpark’s Beam Sets Vault Mark

Jeff Beam of Moorpark College set a school record of 15 feet 6 inches in the pole vault to help the Raiders defeat Glendale and Santa Monica in a Western State Conference track and field meet at Santa Monica on Friday.

Moorpark totaled 96 1/2 points, followed by Glendale with 45 and Santa Monica with 37 1/2.

The victory gave the Raiders an 11-0 record in WSC dual- and tri-meet competition for the third consecutive season.

Beam’s effort marked the second time this season he has set a school record in the vault and the third time a Moorpark athlete has accomplished the feat. Teammate Brian Lubocki set the previous school record of 15-3 last month.

The Raiders were also victorious in the women’s meet, paced by Avonya Linton, who won the 200 in 26.3 seconds and finished second in the 100 in 12.1.

Moorpark (10-0-1) totaled 74 points to defeat Santa Monica, which had 61 and Glendale, which had 31.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Cal Lutheran 10, Claremont 4--Jeff Marks drove in two runs and hit his sixth home run of the season to lead the Kingsmen (16-8, 8-5) to a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory at Claremont.

Jesus Melgoza went six innings, giving up four runs, striking out five and walking three. Steve Fjeldseth took over in the seventh and earned his third save, striking out one and giving up one hit.

Ruben Torres had three hits in as many at-bats, including a two-run double. Teammate Kirk Fellows went three for five, including two doubles.

SOFTBALL

Cal Lutheran defeated La Verne, 3-1, and fell against Loyola Marymount by the same score in pool play of a tournament at UC San Diego.

Tracy Little led the Regals (20-8), collecting three hits and one RBI. She had the team’s only hit against Loyola.

Antelope Valley 4, Desert 3--Andi Boswell had a two run homer and a game-winning single to lead the Marauders past the Roadrunners to gain sole possession of the Foothill Conference with a victory at Antelope Valley.

Sandy Hohm hit a solo home run and Jody Snelling (13-4) earned the victory for the Marauders (18-7, 6-1).

MEN’S SWIMMING

Pierce 77, Santa Monica 17--Jon Van Duinwyk, Chace Greenwood and David Johnson each had three first-place finishes for the Brahmas. Van Duinwyk won the 200-yard individual medley, 200 butterfly and swam the third leg of the 400 medley relay. Greenwood won the 50 and 100 freestyles and swam the first leg of the 400 freestyle relay. Johnson won the 500 and 1,000 freestyle and led off the 400 medley relay.

Valley 81, Canyons 20--Raymond Akopyan, Danny Sullivan and Bobby Bodrogligeti each won two individual events for the Monarchs (6-2, 3-1) in a Western State Conference meet at Valley.

WOMEN’S SWIMMING

Valley 88, Canyons 47--Ann Choi won three individual events for the Monarchs (3-3, 2-2) in a Western State Conference meet at Valley.

Tracy Breuer won three events for Canyons.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Northridge 9, S. Utah 0--The Matadors dropped only 16 games in 18 sets of both singles and doubles to down the Thunderbirds in an American West match at Northridge.

In singles, No. 1 Monica Kocian and No. 5 Nhu Bui recorded 6-0, 6-0 victories for the Matadors.
