A wooden deck collapsed during a party Saturday evening at the home of the former president and chief executive officer of Southern Bell, injuring 59 people, fire officials said.

About 100 people were standing on the deck at the home of B. Franklin Skinner when it collapsed, the officials said. Thirty-eight people were taken to hospitals, including Skinner, who suffered a back injury, and his wife, Ruth Ann.

The 12-by-25-foot deck fell about 15 feet and landed on a c oncrete patio. Injuries ranged from cuts to broken bones.
