A late-night confrontation between two groups of young men--some of whom may have been gang members--ended with the fatal shooting of a 22-year-old Santa Ana man, police said Sunday.

Rodolfo Garcia Segura was in the back seat of a friend’s car about 10:45 p.m. Saturday when he and other men in the car became embroiled in a dispute with another carload of young men in the 200 block of East Chestnut Street, Santa Ana Police Sgt. Brian Collins said.

Someone in the second group opened fire with a semiautomatic handgun, causing a fatal wound to Segura’s upper body, Collins said.

Segura’s friends started to take him to a hospital, then managed to flag down a ambulance en route. Emergency workers tried to save Segura but it was too late, Collins said.

“They tried to revive him, but he was already dead,” Collins said. “We have no one in custody, no descriptions.”

Detectives specializing in gang crimes are investigating, Collins said.
