OXNARD : Amphitheater May Be Named After Dr. Kato

Share

The Ventura County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday will consider naming the College Park amphitheater in Oxnard after the late Dr. Tsujio Kato, who served as mayor of the city for nearly a decade.

After leaving the Oxnard City Council in 1984, Kato became a founding member and co-chairman of the successful California Strawberry Festival, which is held annually at College Park.

Kato, who died Feb. 20 of a heart attack, grew up in Oxnard, attending Oxnard High School and Ventura College before attending dentistry school. He also served on the Ventura County Local Agency Formation Commission, as president of the Oxnard Buddhist Church and president of the Ventura County Japanese American Citizens League.
