2 Will Be Honored for Helping Children

Two Ventura County volunteers who devote at least four hours a week to helping children have been named Big Brother and Big Sister of the year.

Kevin White of Ventura and Kristen Reeves of Simi Valley will be honored for their dedication to the program at a private banquet in Ventura next week, said Lynne West, director of Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Ventura County.

White has been friends with his little brother for three or four years, West said. He also has been active in recruiting new volunteers to serve as Big Brothers and Big Sisters.

Reeves has been spending time with her little sister for five years and also helped organize a camping trip for the group.

West said the county’s 90 Big Brothers and Sisters do important work, helping children from single-parent families. “They turn children’s lives around, one at a time,” she said.

But the award winners went beyond the call of duty.

“These people really do shine, because they do more,” she said.
