The Los Angeles City College basketball team will hold its second-annual awards banquet on Friday, April 21, at the Acapulco restaurant beginning at 8 p.m.

The ceremony will include the presentation of team awards, conference awards, state awards and scholarship announcements.

Six LACC players are expected to announce signings with Division I basketball programs, which would bring the total to nine over the past two years.

“That’s unheard of,” said LACC Coach Mike Miller. “I don’t know of any other junior college program that has had that type of success.”

Two players, Derek Brown and Jason Wright, have already signed letters of intent.

Brown, a 6-foot-7 forward, will play for Providence, and Jason Wright, a 6-1 point guard, will play for New Orleans.

Brown, along with 6-6 forward Sai Tuialii, was named co-most valuable player of the Southern California Athletic Conference.

Tuialli’s choices include Texas Christian University, USC and North Carolina-Charlotte.

Markee Brown, a 6-1 shooting guard, recently visited Providence, and he will also take trips to Clemson, Hawaii, Tulane and the University of South Alabama.

Brown, who was Miller’s most versatile player, is an outstanding shooter and one of the best defensive players at the junior college level.

“Markee has a lot to offer because he is a solid player and does many things well,” Miller said.

Derek Higgins, a 6-4 forward with good leaping ability, has visited Pepperdine and will take trips to Cal State Northridge, the University of South Alabama and Southwest Texas State University.

Reserve player Jason Perrica, a 6-7 pure shooter, will visit Vermont.

Wright, Brown and Higgins also made the All-SCAC team.

“(LACC) is Division I University,” Miller said. “We are making quite a name for ourselves.”
