Blake-Small Makes a Pitch for Being Best in the WAC

Cal State Northridge’s Kathy Blake-Small was named the Western Athletic Conference player of the week for her pitching performances against Long Beach State and San Diego State.

Blake-Small (16-5) pitched two shutouts, struck out 10 and did not walk a batter in 14 innings. She has won seven of her last eight starts and leads the eighth-ranked Matadors (31-12) with a 1.16 earned-run average.

Newbury Park High first baseman Christine Arguijo signed a letter of intent with Loyola Marymount. Arguijo, also a basketball player, is batting .333 for the Panthers.

Quartz Hill High pitcher Correna Berlinger signed a letter of intent with Rhode Island. Berlinger was an All-Golden League selection in 1994.

Baseball

The Antelope Valley Ravens announced the signing of three former Palmdale High players to contracts.

Right-handed pitcher Jack Benner, outfielder Phillip King and first baseman Travis Wilson signed with the Ravens, an independent team in the Golden State Baseball League.

League play is scheduled to start in June.

Soccer

La Canada midfielder Kori Zimmerman said she has signed a letter of intent with UC Irvine.

Zimmerman, who received All-Rio Hondo League and All-Southern Section honors in each of her four seasons with the Spartans, chose the Anteaters over San Diego, San Diego State, St. Mary’s, Pepperdine and UCLA.

Calabasas midfielder Adam Cooper said he will play soccer at UCLA as an invited walk-on in the fall.

Cooper scored 17 goals and had 23 assists for Calabasas last season and led the Coyotes (13-2-2) to the second round of the Southern Section Division IV playoffs.

Cooper, the co-most valuable player of the Frontier League, chose UCLA over University of San Diego, Cal State Northridge and San Francisco.

Canyon High sweeper Kristi Giordano signed a letter of intent with Loyola Marymount.

Giordano, the Foothill League’s player of the year and a second-team Southern Section Division III selection, scored 14 goals and had two assists this season. Canyon (14-7-2) advanced to the Southern Section Division III semifinals.

Royal midfielder Vince Alves plans to play next fall for Westmont College, an NAIA school in Santa Barbara.

Alves, an All-Marmonte League selection, was a top playmaker for the Highlanders, who won the Southern Section Division I championship and shared the Marmonte League title.

Montclair Prep midfielder David Warsavsky, who scored 23 goals last season, plans to play for Emory University, a Division III school in Atlanta, Ga.

The Valley United Stars, a girls’ under-11 team, defeated Chula Vista, 10-0, to win the San Diego Spring Classic.

Jenna Fodor led the scoring with three goals. Celisse Hayden and Kelly Lavery each added two goals.

Golf

Granada Hills senior Darren Angel finished tied for fifth with a 144 for two rounds in the American Junior Golf Assn. Woodlands Junior Classic in Houston last weekend. Jason Semelsberger of Hart tied for ninth at 146.

Basketball

The Simi Valley High basketball program will play host three week-long basketball camps this summer for players from third through 10th grades.

The camps for players entering third through ninth grades are July 17-21 and July 24-28. The fee for those camps is $50 a week or $95 for both weeks. The advanced camp, for players entering the ninth or 10th grade, is June 26-30. The fee is $50. All sessions will be held at the Rancho Santa Susana Community Center.
