For the first time this season, Ila Borders finished what she started. But the Southern California College pitcher couldn’t finish off Chapman, losing, 4-3, in a nonconference baseball game Wednesday at Hart Park.

Leading, 2-1, in the sixth, Borders gave up three consecutive run-scoring singles and Chapman rallied to win its sixth consecutive game.

“Ila did a great job,” Chapman Coach Rex Peters said. “She was facing a hot team, but she battled and kept us off balance the whole game.”

Borders (1-7) had given up four hits through five innings, but the Panthers (14-18) got five hits in the sixth, including run-scoring singles by Jason Moeller, Chapman’s ninth batter; Kurt Townson and Brad Martin.

SCC (12-30) scored twice on three hits in the second inning off starter Scott Cukier (1-5), but the Vanguards didn’t get another hit until Bryce Primm led off the eighth with his first home run of the season to make it 4-3. Cukier retired 13 in a row at one point.

Allistair Ray pitched a perfect ninth for Chapman for his second save.
