CAMP PENDLETON — A 14-year-old girl died less than an hour after a young man accidentally fired a .25-caliber handgun he had been handling Wednesday, camp authorities said.
At 4:10 p.m., Camp Pendleton firefighters and paramedics were summoned to treat a girl who had been shot in the chest on the Marine base.
She was taken to an undisclosed hospital and died shortly afterward, Camp Pendleton Sgt. Claudia Nelson said.
The names of the victim and the man and their relationship were not released.
The shooting is being investigated by the Criminal Investigation Department and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service.
“At this time, we are not releasing any other information,” Nelson said.
