Until the 1960s, a stretch of the coast between Huntington Beach and Seal Beach was something of an embarrassment.

The long, sandy shoreline was a popular spot for campers, who often left litter and debris on the beach. The area became so filthy at times that locals came to refer to it as Tin Can Beach, according to the book “Historical Place Names in Orange County.”

In 1961, Bolsa Chica State Beach was established, and officials began cleaning the beach regularly and enforcing anti-littering rules.

Nonetheless, some old-timers still refer to the coastal area near the Bolsa Chica wetlands as Tin Can Beach.
