Raul Varela Madrid; Retired Navy Base Worker
Raul Varela Madrid, a longtime Camarillo resident, has died following a lengthy illness. He was 80.
A former civilian employee of the Naval Construction Battalion Center at Port Hueneme, Madrid retired from government service after completing a career that spanned 30 years.
Madrid, who died Friday at St. John’s Pleasant Valley Hospital, served a three-year hitch in the Army during World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart and Good Conduct medals, according to family members.
Born in Las Cruces, N.M., Madrid lived in Ventura County for 50 years and was an avid golfer. He was a member of the Ventura County Maga Golf Assn.
Madrid is survived by wife Irene of Camarillo, daughter Juletta of Port Hueneme and several nieces and nephews.
A visitation has been scheduled for Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Pierce Brothers Griffin Mortuary Chapel in Camarillo.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary Magdalen Church in Camarillo. Burial will follow at Conejo Mountain Memorial Park in Camarillo.
