FEMA Rental Aid Extended 6 Months

About 2,000 homeowners still awaiting final earthquake repairs on their homes just received a six-month extension on emergency rental assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Rep. Anthony C. Beilenson (D-Woodland Hills), who represents parts of Thousand Oaks, on Monday announced approval of a request he and other congressmen made to FEMA Director James Lee Witt. FEMA will extend the deadline from July 17 until Jan. 17, 1996, officials said.

“It became obvious a few months ago that if the deadline were enforced, people would be in bad shape while they were waiting for their homes and condos to be repaired,” Beilenson said from his Washington office on Monday. Cory LaBianca, a FEMA spokesman in Pasadena, said the majority of those still receiving federal rent assistance-- about 1,700 families--are condominium owners. Many of those people were among the residents who complained that they were wrongly told by FEMA officials that their homes were inhabitable in the days and months following last year’s earthquake.
