SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

A 43-year-old man, apparently irate about not being able to order a beer at a City of Industry restaurant, was shot and killed by a security guard after he allegedly tried to attack the guard with a wooden bar stool.

Jesus Galvan was killed at La Poblana restaurant in the 14200 block of Nelson Avenue at about 1:35 a.m. Saturday, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s spokesman George Ducoulombier said. Galvan, who was struck in the upper torso, died at the scene.

Sheriff’s Deputy Gabe Ramirez said Galvan entered the restaurant after closing and became enraged when he was told he could not have a beer. Galvan began knocking items off tables and then attacked the manager, hitting him with his fist, Ramirez said.

An armed security guard, Alfredo Morales, 27, of El Monte, then stepped in and tried to get Galvan to leave, Ramirez said. Galvan allegedly hit Morales in the head with his fist and then picked up a wooden bar stool.

Morales backed out of the restaurant door as Galvan tried to hit him with the bar stool, Ramirez said. Morales then fired two rounds from a 9-millimeter handgun, the deputy said.

Deputies said Morales appeared to be acting in self-defense. The case remains under investigation.
