Six County Finalists for State Honors

Six county athletes--three boys and three girls--have been named finalists for the California Scholastic Federation Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards, which will be announced during the State track and field championships June 3 at Cerritos College.

The county nominees are Carrie Caulkins (Esperanza), whose primary sport is track and field; Kimberly Cobb (San Clemente), swimming; Susan Prchal (Mater Dei), volleyball; Benjamin Brieg (Esperanza), water polo; David Lee (Sunny Hills), soccer, and Jimmy Lee (Tustin), golf.

Ten boys and 10 girls were selected from 668 candidates throughout the state. Candidates were nominated by their high school principals. To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a minimum 3.7 grade-point average and demonstrate superior ability in at least two years of varsity competition.

The two winners will each receive a $2,500 college scholarship from Toyota and an expense-paid trip to the state Capitol in Sacramento.

The Orange County Athletic Directors Assn. will name its athletes of the year at its annual spring meeting May 17 at the Anaheim Stadium Club.

Each league nominated a boy and girl for the award. The nominees:

Academy League: Georgina Cervantes (Connelly) and Damian Raibon (St. Margaret’s).

Century League: Eliaser Estrada (Santa Ana Valley) and Andy Lauridsen (Orange).

Empire League: Julie Adams (Cypress) and Ismail Abdullah (El Dorado).

Freeway League: Megumi Takasaki (Sunny Hills) and Daniel Ploog (La Habra).

Garden Grove League: Valerie Downen (Pacifica) and David Breihan (Los Amigos).

Golden West League: Kimberly Engesser (Ocean View) and Doug Gottlieb (Tustin).

Olympic League: Lauren Juranek (Orange Lutheran) and Matt Van Hook (Calvary Chapel).

Orange League: Beth St. Clair (Brea Olinda) and Joey Secoda (Valencia).

Pacific Coast League: Tiffany Boykin (Laguna Hills) and Nate Pivaroff (Laguna Beach).

Sea View League: Melissa Schutz (Newport Harbor) and Ryan Korinke (Santa Margarita).

South Coast League: Nancy Dollar (San Clemente) and Gabriel Gardner (San Clemente).

Sunset League: Marcy Crouch (Marina) and Dahrin Footman (Esperanza).
