PREP ROUNDUP : Rengel Leads Valencia to Orange League Swimming Title

Rori Rengel’s victory in the 100-yard butterfly and the 100 backstroke helped Valencia to a victory in the Orange League girls’ swimming finals Thursday.

Rengel, who was named most valuable swimmer of the meet, won the backstroke in 1 minute 3.66 seconds and the butterfly in 1:01.27. Both times qualify her for the Southern Section preliminaries. She also swam on the winning 400 freestyle relay team (3:56.16).

Valencia sophomore Brianna Foulds also qualified for the Southern Section prelims, winning the 500 freestyle in 5:34.98 and 100 freestyle in 59.53. Valencia had 355 points, Brea Olinda was second (326.5), followed by Magnolia (177.5), Savanna (162) and Western (54).

In the Orange League boys’ swimming finals:

Brea Olinda wins--Tad Murphy was the top swimmer for Brea Olinda, winning the 500 freestyle (5:13.43) and finishing second in the 200 freestyle. Magnolia’s Pat Morrison was the most valuable swimmer winning the 200 freestyle (1:52.45) and the 100 backstroke (58.62), qualifying for the Southern Section preliminaries in both events. Brea Olinda had 358 points, Magnolia had 326, Valencia 200, Savanna 82 and Western 61.

In the Garden Grove League individual golf finals:

La Quinta’s Yi wins--Alex Yi shot one-over 75 for a two-day total of 148 at Los Serranos. Los Amigos’ Matt Stafford (149) and Mark Cone (155) also qualified for the Southern Section individual finals May 22 at Canyon Country Club in Palm Springs.

In the Orange League individual golf finals:

Valencia sweeps top four--Bruce Campbell shot nine-over 224, James Wooley 225, John Lee 229 and Chris Porter 234 for Valencia at Dad Miller, Alta Vista and Los Coyotes. All four advance to the section finals.

In Century League boys’ volleyball:

Orange 3, El Modena 0--Andy Lauridsen had 17 kills for the Panthers (16-2, 8-2), who won 15-11, 15-6, 15-10, to earn a share of the league title. Orange shares the championship with El Modena (13-2, 8-2) and Foothill (10-4, 8-2).

In the Golden West League:

Ocean View 3, Westminster 1--Cam Carr had 19 kills and Ted Norman 17 as Ocean View (9-7, 7-3) qualified for the playoffs for the first time with a 15-12, 9-15, 15-13, 15-5 victory.

In the Garden Grove League:

Rancho Alamitos 3, Bolsa Grande 2--Ben Lam had 21 kills to lead Rancho Alamitos (10-5, 7-5), 15-7, 14-16, 9-15, 15-9, 15-3. Tim Schroeder had 27 kills for Bolsa Grande (8-10, 2-10).
