The Cal State Northridge men’s basketball team signed one recruit and lost another on Monday.

Matt Andrews, a 6-foot-7, 240-pound power forward from Cuesta College, said he accepted a scholarship to play for the Matadors. Andrews averaged only six points and six rebounds last season, but was instrumental down the stretch as Cuesta won two playoff games by upset.

“He probably averaged 12 points and 10 rebounds in our last 10, 12 games,” Cuesta Coach Rusty Blair said. “He was really a force inside.”

Cuesta was the only team to defeat state junior college champion Ventura College. Andrews, an Arroyo Grande High graduate, was a first-team All-Western State Conference selection.

Gain a forward, lose a guard.

Kevin Deal, a 6-foot point guard from College of the Sequoias, will be forced to decline a scholarship from Northridge, Sequoias Coach John Bragano said.

Deal, a two-time All-Central Valley Conference selection, is 11 units short of attaining the associate in arts degree the NCAA requires of junior college transfers enrolling at Division I schools. Deal had accepted a scholarship offer from Northridge in November.
