TRUANTS: Playing hooky from school could soon mean a trip to the judge. . . . The Los Angeles City Council gave preliminary approval Tuesday to a measure that would make truants face a traffic court judge who could fine them or impose community service (B1). The toughened policy, championed by Councilwoman Laura Chick, awaits the full council’s approval.

EIGHT IS ENOUGH: When the hit NBC-TV show “ER” needed a baby, producers turned to the Quezada quintuplets. Born in February, the West Hills wonders took turns portraying Chloe’s newborn daughter in tomorrow night’s episode. Because of labor laws, no one baby could be used in the entire episode. . . . But even five weren’t enough. Said an NBC spokeswoman: “They shared this part with a set of triplets.”

GUILTY: A jury found Joan Mills guilty Tuesday of vehicular manslaughter in the death of 13-year-old Matthew Fischer. Her car hit and killed the child after he stepped off a school bus. Mills reportedly told police she thought she had hit a dog. . . . The Fischer family, above, reacts to verdict (B1).

SPY HUNT: Top secret leaks by a spy in the San Fernando Valley? Believe it. . . . City Council candidate Barbara Yaroslavsky is searching for a double agent who may have disclosed campaign secrets to Mike Feuer, her opponent in the 5th District runoff election (B1). A top Yaroslavsky aide blasted Feuer for succumbing to “old-style campaign politics.” Feuer’s camp denies planting a spy. Said Feuer’s campaign manager Cynthia Corona: “We have not made a conscious effort to put someone in their camp.”

TONIGHT: It’s boxing night at the Warner Center Marriott in Woodland Hills, but not everybody’s happy about the lineup. Former national amateur heavyweight champion John Bray of Van Nuys pulled out of the bout (C6). “We’re totally disgusted he walked out,” said George Randazzo of Chicago Shaker Management, which invested $300,000 in Bray. . . . Tonight’s fights include Young Dick Tiger taking on Armando Campos (C8). First bell: 7:30. Information: (213) 266-7133.
