COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Chapman’s Tanaka Opens With a 79

Yasu Tanaka of Chapman was in 39th place after shooting 79 in the first round of the NCAA Division III men’s golf championships Wednesday at Hulman Links in Terre Haute, Ind.

Mark Paluszak of Otterbein (Ohio) College leads with a four-under-par 68.

First-round play was scheduled to start Tuesday but rain and lightning delayed play for 32 hours. The second round is today. Otterbein is the team leader at 293.

In men’s tennis:

Tontz out--Senior Chris Tontz of UC Irvine lost in the first round of the NCAA Men’s Tennis Singles Championships to Johan Hede of Mississippi, 7-6, 7-5. Tontz, who was ranked 43rd nationally, finishes the season 18-11. Hede was ranked 23rd in the nation.
