LACC’s Baseball Program Is Down to Its Last Pitch

[Regarding] “Say It Ain’t So: LACC Reportedly Plans to End Baseball Program After 63 Years,” [Sports, April 30]. Why is the program going to end when there are players that leave high school in the inner city that need a college plan other than a four-year school?

The track record speaks for itself. The program has been amazing for 63 years. This program does not have to end. With more pampering, the baseball program at LACC can be revived. I think a committee should be organized to find ways to eliminate the negative aspects of the program and look at the positives it has done for the people and the inner-city Los Angeles communities.

The program has been stronger through the years. Great players and students have attended this college and LACC needs them to speak out on why this athletic program is going down. Remember: “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.”

These people who have been through the baseball program at L.A. City College deserve a right to speak out on all issues causing these budget cuts to take effect.

Editor’s note: Los Angeles City College officials reversed themselves Friday, deciding to seek ways to maintain the program. Quinn is a former LACC baseball player and coach.
