Occidental’s Environmental Science and Environmental Studies Program, chaired by James Sadd, professor of geology, requires students to major in one of the traditional disciplines offered by the college (such as geology, public policy or art), in addition to a coordinate major in either environmental science or environmental studies. In addition to the program at Occidental College, a rich selection of environmental career training programs has been developed at institutions of higher learning throughout Southern California.

A central source of information on courses offered by the California Community College System is the Partnership for Environmental Technology Education at (510) 225-0669. Information can also be obtained by calling one of the following junior colleges: East Los Angeles, West Los Angeles, Southwestern, Golden West, Irvine Valley, El Camino, Fullerton, Oxnard, Pasadena or Santa Monica.

Nearby California State University campuses offering bachelor’s degrees in environmental science, health and safety are Fullerton, Northridge, San Bernardino and Pomona.

The University of California campuses offering environmental bachelor’s and graduate degree programs are Berkeley (Department of Environmental Science and Management), Davis (programs in nature and culture, environmental biology and management, and policy analysis and planning); Irvine (Social Ecology); Riverside (Environmental Engineering); UCLA (schools of architecture and public health, and the Department of Geography), and Santa Barbara (School of Environmental Science and Management will open in 1996).

These universities also offer a wide range of extension courses leading to professional certification in environmental management of toxics, waste and air quality.
