The St. Louis Cardinals placed shortstop Ozzie Smith on the 15-day disabled list because of a sore shoulder.

Last month, Smith, 40, became the oldest opening-day shortstop since Luke Appling in 1950. He has been sidelined for the last six games because of pain in the shoulder.

Doctors will try treatment and further diagnostic testing before considering surgery. Smith said he would be sidelined about six weeks if arthroscopic surgery is required.

Cincinnati catcher Benito Santiago is likely to need surgery on his injured right elbow. He will be examined today in Birmingham, Ala., by James Andrews. He hit .324 in 10 games before pain and swelling in his throwing elbow forced him to the bench. Meanwhile, Red outfielder Deion Sanders was found innocent of charges related to a dispute with a stadium guard after a game on Aug. 8.

Players won their first salary arbitration case of the spring when outfielder Darren Lewis was awarded $1.85 million, more than five times his $350,000 salary last year. The San Francisco Giants had offered $1.025 million.
