Defending champion and second-seeded Robert Williams of Dorsey will face top seeded Noah Newman of Marshall on Wednesday to determine the boys’ singles City Section champion.

Newman easily defeated No. 4 seed James Oh of Chatsworth, 6-3, 6-3, while Williams struggled to beat unseeded Jesse Melton of Los Angeles Center of Enriched Studies, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, Thursday at the Racquet Centre in Studio City.

The finalists scouted each other as they played their semifinal matches. Competing in adjacent courts at the same time, Williams and Newman glanced at each other several times, making eye contact more than once.

“There was a good match going on,” said a deadpan Newman, who had five aces to offset 18 unforced errors.

Newman finished off Oh in 48 minutes, but the Williams-Melton match took nearly two hours.

In quarterfinal action, Newman defeated Anthony Gabriele of Birmingham, 6-3, 6-2, and Williams held off Andy Roland of Hollywood, 6-1, 7-5.

In doubles, Sebastian Albelais and Mike Gasparian of Marshall lost to Jon Singer and Adam Pennella of Palisades, 6-3, 7-5.
