Los Angeles police on Monday released the name of a Mission Hills man who was shot and killed in Sun Valley and also identified a suspect in the crime.

Daniel Covarrubias, 18, of Sun Valley, had been arrested within minutes after police found him trying to evade arrest for the Sunday shooting death of Brian Allen Hoohuli, 31, but police named him Monday as a suspect.

Covarrubias was booked on for investigation of murder and is being held in jail without bail, according to Detective Oscar Carballo.

Hoohuli was shot at 5:20 p.m. Sunday in the 8200 block of De Garmo Avenue in Sun Valley, according to police. He died from gunshot wounds to the upper torso at Pacifica Hospital.

Covarrubias apparently fled from the scene after the shooting, heading west on Cantara Street to an unknown location, police said. He was arrested five blocks away from the site of the shooting.

Carballo said the motive for the shooting is still unknown, but police do not believe it was gang related and there was no sign of robbery.
