Top Volleyball Players to Play All-Star Match

San Clemente’s Gabe Gardner and Newport Harbor’s Misty May are among the top players scheduled to appear in the Orange County high school volleyball all-star match Thursday at Newport Harbor High.

May, who has signed a letter of intent with Long Beach State, helped the Sailors win the Southern Section and State Division I titles. Newport Harbor finished ranked No. 1 in the nation by some publications.

Gardner, a 6-foot-9 outside hitter who has signed with USC, helped the Tritons reach the Division I volleyball title match for the first time since 1981. A multisport standout, Gardner was named the Times Orange County player of the year in water polo.

The girls’ match begins at 6 p.m. with the boys’ match to follow at 7:30 p.m.

Fountain Valley’s Ron La Ruffa will coach the South and El Dorado’s Steve Gullotti the North in the 28th Kiwanis Orange County All-Star baseball game set for 6:30 p.m. June 6 at Glover Stadium in Anaheim.

Jenny Lee of Fullerton shot par 71 Monday at Starr Pass Golf Club in Tucson--the best round of the day--to finish tied for second in the Golf for Women Magazine Girls championship.

Lee, a senior at Sunny Hills and defending champion of the tournament, had earlier rounds of 74 and 78 for a 54-hole total of 223 and was two strokes behind winner Kristen Register of Roswell, Ga. Lee shared second with Cristie Kerr of Miami. Jenny Glasgow of Corona del Mar had an 83 Monday for a three-day total of 240. The tournament was conducted by the American Junior Golf Assn.

Sophomore Charlie Gabbert, a member of Santa Margarita’s junior varsity baseball team, has been selected to play on the East-West Ambassadors USA baseball team.

The team will be one of 80 playing in the “Baseball in Paradise Invitational Tournament” June 16-28 in Kauai, Hawaii. Australia, Cuba, Holland, Italy, the Czech Republic and France are among countries sending teams.

Santiago has hired Peter Marshall as its water polo coach, athletic director Ron Heiman said. Marshall, an El Toro graduate, has coached club water polo in Des Moines, Iowa.

Liberty Christian’s Ray Cook tied the school record for strikeouts in a season last week with 10 against LaVerne Lutheran; he finished with 115, matching Chris Buckles’ 1989 total.

Teammate Mike Winters finally got caught on the basepaths. After stealing 23 times successfully, Winters got caught stealing in thier victory over Buckley last week.
