Southern California College has hired Bob Wilson, men’s basketball coach at Hawaii Hilo, as athletic director, the college announced Friday.

Wilson, expected to start July 1, will take over a program in transition. In April, Ron Prettyman, athletic director since 1983, stepped down in April to become athletic director at Cal State Dominguez Hills. In early May, baseball Coach Charlie Phillips was fired by Wayne Kraiss, college president. Several days later, tennis Coach Rob Pearson told Terry Zeigler, the acting athletic director, he wouldn’t be returning next season.

“I’m really excited about coming to SCC,” Wilson said in a statement. “They have a fine tradition of excellence in athletics and we will look to continue that tradition in the future.

“Right now our top priority will be to hire a baseball coach.”

Wilson coached men’s basketball at Hawaii Hilo for 10 years, compiling a 152-128 record. He was athletic director and men’s basketball coach at Phillips University in Enid, Okla., from 1974-85. He was an assistant basketball coach at Colorado State, Northern Colorado and Nebraska Omaha.

Wilson played basketball at Wyoming, helping the Cowboys to the Western Athletic Conference title in 1967 and 1969.
