HUNTINGTON PARK : School Creates Fund for Victim’s Child
East Los Angeles College has established a scholarship trust fund for the daughter of Norma de la Cruz, 21, one of three students killed by a hit-and-run driver on May 11.
De la Cruz and two other women were at a crosswalk at Gage and Woodward avenues in Bell when they were killed on their way to classes. Carlos Manuel Ruiz de la Ville, 31, a Cuban immigrant from Bell Gardens, has been charged with murder, felony hit-and-run and felony grand theft auto. He is set to be arraigned on Monday.
The fund will help De la Cruz’s 6-year-old daughter with expenses she may encounter in seeking a college education, said Sharon Allerson, a developmental communications instructor at the college and one of the victim’s teachers.
Contributions to the fund should be sent to: East Los Angeles College Norma De la Cruz Scholarship, attention Sharon Allerson, 1301 Avenida Cesar Chavez, Monterey Park, 91754.
