Ethiopian Breaks Record in 10,000 Meters

Haile Gebrselassie of Ethiopia set a world record for 10,000 meters, running it in 26 minutes 43.53 seconds and breaking the old mark by nearly nine seconds at the Adriaan Paulen Memorial meet Monday in Hengelo, Netherlands.

Gebrselassie, 21, ran the first half of the race in 13:21.71, 11 seconds ahead of schedule, in beating the old record of 26:52.23 by Kenyan William Sigei in Oslo on July 22, 1994.

Fellow Ethiopian Assafa Mezgebu was second.

On a reserve field with few spectators present, Russia’s Olga Kuzenkova regained her title as world-record holder in the women’s hammer throw, breaking the record by more than four feet with a throw of 223 feet 6 1/2 inches at the Znamensky Memorial competition. Kuzenkova held the mark until Romania’s Mihaela Melinte edged past her in March with a throw of 219-4 in Bucharest, Romania.

World Boxing Organization junior middleweight champion GianFranco Rosi, 37, of Italy faced a two-year suspension and the loss of his crown as another round of tests confirmed that he took amphetamines before winning his title fight against American Vernon Phillips by decision in Perugia, Italy, on May 17.

John C. Argue, who as president of the Southern California Committee for the Olympic Games was instrumental in obtaining the bid to play host to the ’84 Games, has been named chairman of the Amateur Athletic Foundation of Los Angeles, replacing David L. Wolper. The AAF also awarded $404,978 in grants to 30 youth sports organizations in Southern California as part of its endowment from the ’84 Olympics.

A memorial service will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Palm Valley View Memorial Park in Las Vegas for five-time Baja motorcycle champion Danny Hamel. Hamel was killed Saturday in the Baja 500 when his cycle collided with the car of a spectator who had strayed onto the off-road race course.

A public hearing on a proposal to raise greens fees $2 for adults and $1 for senior citizens and juniors will be conducted Thursday by the L.A. County Board of Supervisors. The hearing will be held at 9:30 a.m. in the Board of Supervisors’ Hearing Room at the Hahn Hall of Administration, 500 West Temple.

George Foreman and Joe Namath will receive lifetime awards and Junior Seau and Raul Mondesi will be recognized with Man of the Year awards in football and baseball, respectively, at the 10th annual Cedars-Sinai Sports Spectacular on Sunday at the Century Plaza Hotel.
