Paul Day of Capistrano Valley doubled in three runs in the top of the ninth inning to give the South a 10-6 victory over the North in the 28th Orange County All-Star baseball game Tuesday at La Palma Park.

The North led 4-1 in the fifth and 6-4 in the sixth before the South rallied.

The score was tied, 6-6, to start the ninth when Dan Keller of Fountain Valley started the winning rally with a double against Servite’s Brian Greene.

Aaron Gallegos of Tustin walked but was thrown out at second as Keller went to third on a pitch in the dirt. Greene walked Marina’s David Titov and hit Fountain Valley’s Greg Hanojan to load the bases.

Chad Ponchak looked at a third strike for the second out and Greene got ahead of Day, a ball and two strikes. After missing outside with a fastball, Greene threw an off-speed pitch and Day lined it off the fence in left-center field. He scored the final run on a wild pitch.

“I was way nervous,” said Day, who was named most valuable player.

Greene took the loss and La Quinta’s Craig Jones, who worked a perfect eighth, got the victory. Jones was 15-0 this season and won all five playoff games for the Aztecs, Southern Section Division III champion.

Canyon’s Darren Chandler, one of three Comanches to start in the outfield for the North, had run-scoring singles in the second and fourth to give his team a 2-1 lead. Eric Valent, also of Canyon, had a double down the right-field line, a triple off the right-field fence and sacrifice fly. He was given the most hustle award.

Valent’s sacrifice fly in the sixth put the North ahead, 6-4, but the South tied it in the seventh when Titov singled to right to drive in two runs.

The South leads the series, 15-13.
