New York Yankee General Manager Gene Michael said the team is making an effort to trade disgruntled outfielder Danny Tartabull.

“We have initiated discussions with some teams, but we haven’t generated any interest yet,” Michael said after an 8-3 loss to the Oakland Athletics, the Yankees’ 13th loss in 16 games. Tartabull, who has been used as a designated hitter for most of the season, played right field, going 0 for 4, and was booed unmercifully by the crowd at Yankee Stadium.

Tartabull, batting .226 with three homers and 14 runs batted in, reportedly would welcome a trade. However, Michael is finding no takers because of Tartabull’s five-year, $25-million contract, which runs through next season.

“His contract is prohibitive, and we’ve even offered to pay some of it,” Michael said.

David Segui, frustrated by a lack of playing time with the New York Mets, was traded to the Montreal Expos for minor league right-hander Reid Cornelius.

Segui lost his job at first base to Rico Brogna last year and then saw his role reduced further this season despite accommodating the Mets’ request to switch to left field. He became a player without a position last month, when Bobby Bonilla moved from third base to left and Edgardo Alfonzo took over third.

San Diego shortstop Andujar Cedeno has agreed to a one-year, $1.15-million contract, avoiding arbitration. . . . Former Cincinnati Red third baseman Chris Sabo has signed a minor league contract with the St. Louis Cardinals.

Replacement player Doug Cinnella, 31, filed a class-action suit against the Yankees, claiming the ballclub failed to pay him and each of his 29 teammates the $20,000 termination payment stipulated in their contracts.
