Russ Ortiz, a former standout pitcher at Montclair Prep, signed Wednesday with the San Francisco Giants for a bonus package valued at more than $100,000.
Ortiz, a fourth-round pick, said the decision to give up his final year of eligibility at Oklahoma was not difficult.
“As soon as I found out what round I got drafted in, I knew I would sign,” he said by phone from Norman, Okla. “It was just a matter of how much money I would be offered.”
Ortiz said the bonus included more than $90,000 cash, plus tuition for his final two semesters of college.
Ortiz, a 6-foot-1, 190-pound right-hander, was a starter and a reliever for the Sooners, who won the national championship last year but were knocked out of the College World Series after two games this season.
Ortiz said he didn’t know if the Giants intend to use him as a starter or reliever. He will be assigned to Class-A Bellingham, Wash.
