LOS ANGELES : Youth Organizations Win Federal Education Grants
Five Los Angeles-area organizations on Friday received more than $3 million in federal grants to provide disadvantaged youths with education and training in construction.
The U.S. Housing and Urban Development Department’s Youthbuild grants will give the teen-agers an opportunity to work and get an education and will help the agency expand the supply of affordable housing for low-income and homeless people, according to HUD Secretary Henry Cisneros.
The Pacific Asian Consortium in Employment of Los Angeles is getting a $999,972 grant. The 25 participants will help build Casa Heiwa, a 100-unit rental development in Little Tokyo. Groups taking part in the project are Search to Involve Philippine Americans, Asian-American Drug Abuse Program and Asian Pacific Health Care Venture.
The Los Angeles Conservation Corps won a grant for $999,876.
The 30 participants will help build 44 single-family homes in South-Central Los Angeles. The corps and the Youth Employment Systems are partners in the program.
The Century Freeway-Affirmative Action Committee Inc. of Inglewood will receive a $999,488 grant.
The 30 participants will be renovating a dozen units of low-income housing in the city of Commerce.
The city of Long Beach was awarded a $99,120 planning grant, and Provecto Pastoral of Los Angeles will get a $97,750 planning grant.
