Tabasco Cat Retired After Tendon Injury
Tabasco Cat, the 1994 Preakness and Belmont winner, was retired from racing Friday only hours after injuring a tendon during a morning workout.
Owners William T. Young and David P. Reynolds announced 4-year-old Tabasco Cat will stand stud at Young’s Overbrook Farm in Lexington.
Tabasco Cat began trainer Wayne Lukas’ winning streak of five consecutive Triple Crown races. He ran second by a neck in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Classic, bringing his lifetime earnings to $2,347,000.
Lukas was not immediately available for comment.
In December 1993, Lukas’ son, Jeff, was in a coma for two months after Tabasco Cat nearly trampled him to death.
Jeff Lukas is now fully recovered from the accident.
