NATIONAL LEAGUE ROUNDUP : Memory Serves Smoltz Well Against Reds, 10-0

If John Smoltz’s change-up gets to be as good as his memory, watch out.

Smoltz made up for one of his worst major-league moments Monday night at Cincinnati by pitching a five-hitter to defeat the Cincinnati Reds, 10-0, and extend the Atlanta Braves’ winning streak to six games.

Smoltz (6-3) gave up only four singles and a double as he dominated the Reds exactly one year to the day that they hit four homers off of him in one inning.

“I have a long memory,” Smoltz said. “One thing that stuck in my mind was the way they beat me in Atlanta last year. They just pummeled me.”

Fred McGriff hit a solo homer and Mark Lemke had a two-run triple as Atlanta scored five runs off Pete Schourek (4-4).

McGriff added a solo homer in the ninth off Tim Pugh.

Philadelphia 6, New York 3--Andy Van Slyke hit a two-run homer in his debut for the Phillies at New York.

Van Slyke, acquired Sunday from Baltimore, singled in his first at-bat and homered in the third inning. The five-time Gold Glove winner also made a nice shoestring catch in center field.

Paul Quantrill (6-2) gave up six hits and one walk in 6 1/3 innings with five strikeouts. Heathcliff Slocumb pitched the ninth inning for his 17th save.

Pittsburgh 8, San Francisco 2--Steve Pegues hit his first two major league homers after reliever Steve Mintz replaced injured Giant starter Trevor Wilson at Pittsburgh.

Denny Neagle (7-3) recovered from a two-run first inning to pitch seven scoreless innings before being lifted. Six of his seven wins have come following Pirates’ losses.

Wilson, who missed the 1994 season following shoulder surgery, retired the first four hitters he faced when he waved Manager Dusty Baker to the mound. After walking the next two hitters, Wilson was lifted with discomfort in his shoulder and will be examined today by a team doctor.

Houston 6, Montreal 3--Darryl Kile (3-5) scattered seven hits over six innings and Orlando Miller hit a tiebreaking two-run single in the sixth at Montreal.

With the score tied, 3-3, Jeff Fassero (7-4) walked Tony Eusebio and Luis Gonzalez with one out in the sixth. The runners advanced on a groundout and both scored on Miller’s single.

San Diego 5, Chicago 3--Rookie Roberto Petagine’s pinch-hit three-run homer with two outs in the seventh inning at San Diego helped the Padres climb above .500 for the first time in three years.

Kevin Foster (4-4) held the Padres to two runs on five hits through six innings, and retired the first two batters in the seventh. But he walked Jody Reed and Andujar Cedeno before Petagine’s homer.

The Padres (25-24) haven’t had a winning mark since they finished the 1992 season 82-80.

Florida 7, Colorado 2--Jeff Conine drove in four runs with three hits, including a three-run homer at Denver.

Ellis Burks hit two leadoff homers--in the first and ninth innings--to account for both Colorado runs.
