Driver Held in Pedestrian’s Death
A 46-year-old man was arrested early Tuesday on suspicion of drunk driving and vehicular manslaughter after he struck and killed a teen-ager who darted out in front of traffic, investigators said.
Fernando G. Ortiz, 19, of Westminster was crossing Westminster Boulevard near Newland Street about 12:30 a.m. when he was hit by a 1957 Chevrolet driven by Denis Gregory of Garden Grove, police traffic investigator Al Brackett said.
Gregory had been driving about 50 m.p.h. in a 40 m.p.h. zone and was suspected of being drunk, police said. He was being held at Orange County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bail. He was not injured, police said.
Police said Ortiz was not in a crosswalk. He died at the scene.
