GOLF ROUNDUP : Fullerton’s Lee Is Medalist in Public Links

Jenny Lee of Fullerton was the medalist after shooting a three-under-par 70 Thursday in the final round of stroke play in the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links championship at Hominy Hill Course in Colts Neck, N.J.

Eunice Choi of Dove Canyon also advanced to match play. She shot a second-round 75 for a two-day total of 152 on the 6,004-yard course. Thirty-two players advance.

Lee, a graduate of Sunny Hills High who will be a freshman at Texas next fall, was the only player under par in the stroke-play portion. She was two-under 144, with Shannon Hare of South San Francisco second at 146.

There will be two rounds of match play today, with the winners advancing to quarterfinals Saturday morning. The semifinals will be later that day, with the winners moving to Sunday’s 18-hole final.

John Park of Fullerton shot a one-under 71 for a 216 total to finish third in the American Junior Golf Assn. boys’ 15-18 Mission Hills Desert Junior tournament at Rancho Mirage.

Joel Kribel of Pleasanton won the division on the third hole of a sudden-death playoff. He finished with a 72-214. Jason Alred of Ashland, Ore., finished second on the 6,894-yard Dinah Shore Tournament Course.

Terry Noe of Fullerton and Kelly Craig of Orange finished at 219. Mission Viejo’s Stephen Wagner shot 222.

In the girls’ 15-18 division, Grace Park of Phoenix won by 13 strokes with a 211 total.

Ronald Won of Irvine shot a final-round 80 and finished fifth at 229 in the 13-14 boys’ competition. James Oh won with a 221 total.

Darren Humphrey of Newport Beach was eliminated by Temecula’s Ed Cuff, 1 up, in second-round matches of the California Golf Assn. Amateur Championship at Pebble Beach Golf Links.

Defending champion Steve Woods of Upland defeated Pat Duncan of Rancho Santa Fe, 4 and 3, to reach the quarterfinals.
