A 15-year-old boy who was shot to death on the street was apparently killed over a gang issue, police said Friday.

The boy, identified as George Carino of Burbank, apparently associated with gangs himself, police said.

“Based on the conversation that went on, they were targeting him specifically because of some gang activity,” said Burbank Police Lt. Larry Koch. “The motivation seems to be gang involvement by all of the participants.”

At 11:58 p.m. Thursday, Koch said, George was walking along on the 400 block of South Lake Street when two men wearing dark clothes approached him and spoke briefly in terms commonly used by gang members.

One of the killers pulled out a small-caliber pistol and shot George several times before running away, he said. George was declared dead on the spot, Koch said.

About 45 minutes after the shooting, Glendale police picked up two men fitting the descriptions of the killers, who appeared to be in their 20s, but they were released Friday afternoon for lack of evidence and will not be charged, Koch added.

Police declined to release any other details of the shooting.

The slaying was the fourth of the year in Burbank and the first gang-related killing in the city since 1992.
