Finally, the News From Across the Sea

It amazes me that in America if someone becomes a U.S. citizen it is seen in the American press as “the most fabulous thing in the world.” Yet, if someone becomes a British citizen, it is seen as “irritating,” as Julie Cart stated in her Wimbledon story of July 4, (“Sampras Grit Fells New Brit.”) Considering that the U.S. soccer team has a German (Thomas Dooley) who can hardly speak English and a host of other foreign-born players whose citizen status is quite dubious, this amazes me. It seems that there are double standards here.

Considering that America is made up of a nation of immigrants who are cheered when they do well for their adopted country, why do you in the American press find it so disgusting if the same thing happens in Britain?
