The odds were good that Craig Renfroe would get engaged when he placed his marriage proposal on the Ruidoso Downs Racetrack tote board Saturday. The courtship had been going on four years.

The message to Renee Sherwood flashed on the electronic board between the first and second races, and Renfroe told Sherwood to look up.

“Renee, will you marry me? I love you. Craig,” the board beamed.

It took her several races to reply.

“I was in shock,” she explained after the couple was ushered to the winner’s circle following the sixth race.

Asked point blank what her answer was, she said, to the crowd’s rousing approval, “After four years with this guy, the answer is definitely yes.”
