Central Los Angeles : Ground Broken for Bike Path Along River
City officials broke ground Monday for the first stretch of the Los Angeles River Bike Path, a bikeway on the river’s banks that eventually will reach from Griffith Park to Elysian Park.
When completed, the seven-mile, 12-foot-wide bikeway is expected to attract as many as 2,000 bicycling commuters a day.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is funding the $5-million project. “This may be the vehicle of the 21st Century--the bicycle--because we can’t continue to clog up our freeways without building new ones, and it’s hard to build new freeways,” said Los Angeles City Council President John Ferraro.
Plans include a possible extension to Downtown Los Angeles and a westerly route from Riverside Drive into the San Fernando Valley.
